Chiropractic
- Questions and Answers
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is concerned
with human health and prevention of disease. Doctors of chiropractic are
physicians who consider man as an integrated being, but give special
attention to spinal biomechanics, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular,
and nutritional relationships.
Chiropractic Licensing and Authorization
All states in the U.S.A. license and officially recognize chiropractic
as a health care profession. They also authorize chiropractic service as a
part of their workers’ compensation programs. The National Conference of
Insurance Legislators adopted a model bill for state health-insurance
programs that defines “physician” to include the doctor of chiropractic.
What does a chiropractor do?
All doctors have a standard procedure of examination to diagnose
the patient’s condition in order to arrive at a plan of treatment. We use the
same time honored methods of consultation, case history, physical
examination, laboratory analysis and x-ray examination. In addition, we also
provide a careful chiropractic structural examination with an emphasis on the
spine. Spinal manipulations are the primary tool which your doctor will be
using to facilitate your recovery.
What is the cause of your discomfort?
Accidents, falls, uneven stress, tension, over-exertion, or any
other factor may cause an inability of the spine to move as a dynamic organ.
As a result, minor displacements or derangements of one or more vertebrae may
occur, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots directly by pressure or
indirectly through reflexes. These irritations, in turn, interfere with and
damage the nerves, discs and joints. They may also weaken the muscles and
alter energies in all parts of the body.
Why can a chiropractor help you?
Doctors of chiropractic fight disease by first analyzing the
spinal column and structural systems for areas of spinal nerve irritation.
They can rebalance and realign the body. The realignment procedures are
called spinal manipulations. The effects of manipulation are multifold:
· Release
of irritation to nerves.
· Restoration
of joint mobility.
· Improvement
of nerve energy to the surrounding muscles and organs.
· Decrease
of nerve excitability that causes muscle spasms.
· Decrease
of joint irritation and inflammation.
The spinal manipulations are painless and take a short time to
accomplish.
Do I need the associated therapeutics?
Along with your chiropractic manipulation, the doctor will often
recommend other therapeutics on the basis of your conditions. They include a
wide spectrum of treatments:
· Chinese
acupuncture and herbs.
· Shiatsu
and massage
· Physiological
therapeutics
· Sports
injury prevention and management
· Rehabilitation
What can be treated by chiro practic?
Chiropractic health care is best known for its effective
management of muscoskeletal disorders. In addition, it also provides a
significant benefit to patients with a wide variety of health conditions.
These include digestive disturbances, allergies, asthma, headache, nervous
conditions, and cardiovascular disorders.
How long will it take to get well?
How long will it take to actually “get well” depends on many
important factors such as lifestyle, nature of the problem, age, and vitality
of the person. A few visits may be sufficient for a single pain problem, but
a chronic condition will require more treatments. Generally, in the
beginning, it may be necessary to receive treatments 2 – 3 times a week.
After the body begins to respond and the condition is under control, the
treatment will be reduced.
Common Questions About Chiropractic
“Should I go to a chiropractor if I’m suffering from a
disease?”
Absolutely! Chiropractic care will help turn on your body’s
natural doctor and improve your self-healing ability. You’d be better able to
fight whatever disease or condition you’re suffering from.
“Does it matter which disease I have?”
It does not. Chiropractic is not for diseases, it’s for people.
If you have a spinal column you need to have it checked for possible spinal
nerve irritation.
“Can I go if I’m under medical care?”
Yes. Having your spinal nerve irritation corrected in important
no matter what other type of care you’re receiving. You can have your spinal
column checked for vertebral subluxations by a doctor of chiropractic and
still visit a doctor of homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy, or medicine.
Other doctors and healers cannot tell if you’re suffering from spinal
irritation (vertebral subluxations) and are not trained in correcting it.
“I’m feeling good. Why should I visit a chiropractor?”
Because feeling “good” is not the same as being healthy. Too
many people who felt “good” have been told they had silent cancers growing
within them, were close to a heart attack, or suddenly fell victim to a
stroke! To ensure health you should make sure your spinal column and
structural system are healthy – and bring in the family! Clinical studies
show that all age groups, from infants to elderly can benefit from
chiropractic care.
“Why should I go to a chiropractor?”
Because having a healthy spinal column makes a good common
sense. If you are sick, you should go to strengthen your natural healing
ability. If you’re feeling fine, you should remember that spinal nerve
irritation (vertebral subluxations) are painless “silent killers.” You and
your family should get your spines checked periodically to make sure you’re
living free from hidden spinal nerve irritation so you’re functioning at your
fullest. Why wait for disease to happen before you begin to improve your
health?
